Proficiency-Based Training – Newly Available Tools

In this lab we will review a proficiency-based approach to hands-on training and assessment, addressing various virtual simulators all sharing a single training management system.  

Standardized self-directed training, individually paced mastery learning, objective assessment with set or customized proficiency benchmarks – can all contribute to the meaningful utilization of simulators, optimizing the learning curve towards demonstrated proficiency, confidence, and eventually – improved patient results.

  • Construct a structured curriculum on a simulator, including cognitive and technical aspects of the addressed subject
  • Describe how captured performance metrics can be integrated as proficiency benchmarks
  • Initiate a data collection project to set benchmarks upon

Peripheral Nerve Block module

A new training opportunity on the Simbionix PERC Mentor Suite
The module contains procedural tasks and clinical cases for the training of ultrasound-guided upper extremity nerve block. Trainees can practice 3 common approaches – interscalene, supraclavicular and infraclavicular.

The procedural tasks offer step-by-step guided scenarios of the different approaches with various anatomies, needle positioning, diameter and depth. The simulated steps include ultrasound evaluation, ultrasound-guided needle insertion and verification.

Pediatric Ultrasound

A new pediatric platform joins the Simbionix’ Ultrasound Mentor family
The new Pediatric Ultrasound simulation platform offers realistic hands-on practice of a wide range of procedures and scenarios dedicated to diagnostic pediatric ultrasound, starting with the new eFAST and Abdominal modules to Cardiac, Lung and more to come. The Meniscal Repair Module is a hands-on training tool for medical professionals to learn and practice the steps of arthroscopic meniscal repair using an all-in approach.

The module features a range of common knee joint pathologies and allows users to learn how to diagnose and identify relevant issues, choose the best tools and techniques, and determine the necessary number of sutures for a complete repair of a meniscal tear.

Simbionix LAP Mentor

Distal Gastrectomy Module
The Distal Gastrectomy Module is a hands-on training tool designed to help medical professionals practice and improve their skills in performing the distal gastrectomy procedure.

The module guides users through the key steps of the surgery, including anatomy identification, incision, and dissection of specific regions. Users can also practice a preoperational evaluation by exploring the abdominal cavity and identifying the presence of tumors and metastasis. The module provides an opportunity to practice techniques such as incision of the omentum, gastrocolic ligament, and mesentery, and helps users avoid potential complications such as injury to the colon, stomach, and gastroepiploic vessels.

This product offers a structured and comprehensive way to improve skills in validated and safe environment.

LAP Express:
Veterinary Curriculum – Canine Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
Prof. Boel Fransson from Washington State University worked with us to develop the first canine laparoscopic curriculum for the LAP Mentor Express simulator. This virtual reality simulation-based curriculum for canine laparoscopic cholecystectomy, presented at ACVS veterinary meeting, will become available in the near future.

“We haven’t had this sort of technology – it’s a game changer,” Fransson said. “The beauty with these systems is they give you an opportunity to make mistakes, and you will make mistakes when you first learn, but we don’t want those mistakes to happen in a live animal.”

Simbionix GI Mentor

Diagnostic EUS Curriculum (Coming Soon) Developed in Collaboration with ASGE
The ASGE and Surgical Science collaboration represents a strategic initiative to guide development of new educational content, simulator learning modules and assessment metrics, and subsequent validation techniques of such training to ensure safe and effective adoption. Initial focus will be on accelerating learning and simulated experience in endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

“The use of GI simulation needs to further evolve, particularity to aid in the standardized attainment of complex procedure skills such as for ERCP and EUS, as they require a high level of technical, cognitive and non-technical competence,” said Bret Petersen, MD, MASGE, ASGE President. “ASGE is pleased to partner with Surgical Science to add simulation-based training to our portfolio of educational offerings for all segments of our membership.”
