TANGO, An EU Horizon Project

TANGO, An EU Horizon Project

In the era of digital technologies and the increasing value of data, the EU-funded TANGO project is exploring cross-sector data sharing to reshape human-machine interaction. With a focus on a citizen-centric, secure, and trustworthy approach, TANGO aims to create a platform that offers transparent, secure, fair, and environmentally sustainable data management.

With the expertise of 21 partner organisations from 9 countries joining forces, TANGO recognizes the minimal adoption of AI-based support systems in critical settings, such as hospitals. The project seeks to establish trust in AI systems by ensuring reliability in predictions and decisions, understanding user needs, and guaranteeing a genuine commitment to support professionals in these settings perform their work better.

"It takes two to TANGO! Our perspective is that a deep mutual understanding between humans and machines is essential for the development of truly effective and innovative AI systems that can expand human reasoning and decision-making capabilities." says TANGO project coordinator Andrea Passerini, an Associate Professor at the Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (DISI) of the University of Trento.

The TANGO project's potential impact on individuals and society will be evaluated through real-world use cases, particularly focusing on enhancing surgical teams' decision-making during operations. Dr. Passerini emphasizes that the success of these case studies will not only validate TANGO but also foster its adoption as the reference framework for developing a new generation of synergistic AI systems, ultimately bolstering Europe's leadership in human-centric AI.

Surgical Science is a part of this international research team, utilizing the endovascular simulator ANGIO Mentor to support the development of clinical decision-making tools. Surgical Science will provide technologies and expertise in simulation and data that will power human-machine interaction and promoting research in AI-based fair and non-exploitative decision-making.

We are excited to be a part of the TANGO consortium and building AI-based decision making for clinical teams working in high stakes environments. With established expertise in producing medical simulation, we are actively working on bringing this amazing learning technology (that simulation is) beyond the realm of medical education and providing simulation as a learning tool and a sandbox for building AI systems. We believe simulation has a great role to play in the future of digital innovation that is bound to transform the medical intervention space.
